House Democrat leaders took action to ensure their members were paid on Tuesday, despite the fact that a stop-gap state budget was not signed into law by the governor until Wednesday and state prison guards, state police troopers and other state workers will not be paid until next week. Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana), who did not receive a paycheck on Tuesday, issued the following statement:
“The action by the House Democrat leadership is the height of arrogance and irresponsibility. It is an outrage to think that they authorized paychecks for the Democrat members of the House of Representatives before the governor even signed the stop-gap budget into law.
“No member of the General Assembly should be paid before our state workers are paid. I applaud the leadership of the House Republicans, Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans for recognizing this fact and holding all of their members’ paychecks – including mine – until the job is done.
“In Indiana County, folks don’t get paid until they get their work done. That’s something I understand and the people of the 62nd Legislative District understand. It is obviously something the House Democrat leaders have yet to learn.”
